Come sit down next to the campfire as old Doug here shares with you a tale of righteousness and woe. How's that for drama?
Ok maybe that was a little too much but what I will say is, Tokyo Rose is a Phoenix Shaving classic and originally the official scent for The Big Shave West 3! So popular it was that day that it sold out within the first 2 hours of the event! (As you might imagine, that didn't go over too well at the time!)
The scent was inspired by Pasadena itself, original home to the first 3 Big Shave events; Roses in homage to the Rose Bowl and Cherry in tribute to the Pasadena Cherry Blossom Festival (which happened during the same time as our event each year)! So through these two celebrations the scent created itself, with a little help from me. It's always magical when an accord comes together so effortlessly!
As you may have noticed above, Tokyo Rose is much more than those two harmonious notes however; Ambergris (vegan), Sandalwood, Oud, Amyris & Cardamom, and though supporting notes, they play a huge, collective part in the success of the fragrance. Both spicy and masculine with a subtle undertone of sensual playfulness in an almost Cherry Coke type heart note! Sounds amazing right?
Due To Much Demand, The Original Label Is Back...sort of?
It's True, Shave Cadets! After observing much chatter online about the original label, we decided to bring it back! Kinda, I made a tweak or two but other than that, it's the same. (yet even more EPIC)
Who Was Tokyo Rose?
Few figures from World War II occupy the strange gray zone between history, myth, and propaganda quite like Tokyo Rose. She was never a single person, but a nickname Allied troops gave to several English-speaking women broadcasting from Japan. The most famous, Iva Toguri, was an American citizen stranded in Japan by the war. Her broadcasts mixed music, banter, and morale-warping propaganda, turning her into a wartime legend. After the war, she became the center of one of America's most controversial treason cases, only to be pardoned decades later. Hero, villain, victim, or scapegoat? More than 80 years later, the mystery of Tokyo Rose still refuses to fade.
As For This Scent?
I said it then and I'll say it now again, Tokyo Rose is Truly an American Classic, as classic as denim, Cherry Coke and white cotton t-shirts any day! A melting pot and marriage of notes like nothing else before or since, and a must have for every shave den across the land! (Trust Me!)
CUBE 2.0?Why is Preshave Soap BETTER Than Preshave Oil?
Well first off, as with anything in life, it all comes down to personal preference. I can tell you why I think it's better, but in the end, do what works for you! First off, unlike using oil, a Preshave Soap will not gunk up your gear and rinses away easy.
I was seriously turned off by all the clean up involved when using oils. Plus I was always concerned about it getting into my favorite brushes undetected and going rancid. Also, applying oil with your hands then holding onto a blade is not the safest move in my book. [That said, if you currently use an oil, apply it with your non-shaver hand!] In short, Preshave Oils inspired me to find a better way!
Why a Preshave Soap is More Effective
A preshave soap really offers more bang for your buck; for one, it's more affordable and longer lasting. Use it first to clean the face before you shave, then rinse. Then reapply the soap prior to whipping up lather: First in a circular motion, then against the grain. The soap gets under the hairs, slightly propping them up, giving the blade more surface area to "bite" on to. The glycerin acts as a humectant pulling more water into the hair, prepping and softening it, thus making it a bigger target to mow down!

CUBE?
The release of CUBE has been a long time coming. For those who are privy to the PAA Universe, you may have seen CUBE hovering in the background on different labels and in ads...observing. I have read a few interpretations by folks in the forums who have noticed CUBE's appearances and have been flummoxed. What Does it Mean? [I super appreciate that folks are becoming more hip to the universe in our labels!]
What Strange Shave Tech is This?
It's great to finally bring CUBE to life for people to interface with! Holding it in your hand you can almost feel a force, an energy pulsating, drawing you in. However, all I can say at this time is, all shall be revealed in a future installment of the saga. Until then, embrace the mystery of CUBE and use it wisely!
