The Witchcraft first appeared this past summer inside our Bermuda Triangle Advent Calendar, and it quickly became one of those scents people kept talking about long after the box had been opened! We knew pretty early on that it deserved a full release, but the interesting part is that, despite making its debut in summer, this fragrance feels completely at home in fall and winter.
Neroli and fir balsam give the opening a bright, aromatic lift, while ginger, cardamom, oud wood, and pepper bring warmth, dryness, and spice through the middle. Patchouli, sandalwood, and tonka settle in underneath it all, giving the fragrance a smooth, earthy depth that feels richer and more complete as the temperature drops.
As for the name, that takes us back to December 22, 1967, when a 23-foot cabin cruiser called Witchcraft was sitting in calm water just off Miami. The shoreline was close, the weather was not threatening, and the call for assistance began without much urgency after the boat reportedly struck something beneath the surface. What happened next has always been the unsettling part.
The communication stopped, the vessel magically disappeared, and when help arrived there was no wreckage, no debris, no oil slick, and no clear explanation for where the boat or its passengers had gone.
Of course, that is where things begin to drift into the kind of territory we love at PAA, because sailors have been telling strange stories about women in the water for centuries, especially stories involving figures who seem human at first glance but become less convincing the closer you get. Melusine is one of the oldest names attached to that kind of folklore, a mysterious woman associated with water whose appearance was said to conceal something other than what it first seemed. In our version of the Witchcraft story, that old legend floats into the waters off Miami, unseen at first, and CUBE shows up a little too late. That strange combination of calm water, old folklore, spice, woods, balsam, and something inexplicable felt like the right world for this scent.
The fragrance itself has that same quality, because it opens bright enough to feel familiar, then keeps moving into warmer, darker territory until the woods, patchouli, sandalwood, and tonka take over and give it the kind of finish that seems made for cold weather. What I like to call, Sweater Weather.
For those who discovered The Witchcraft in the Bermuda Triangle Advent, this is the return you have been waiting for! For everyone else, this is your first chance to experience one of the most talked-about scents from the box, now released in full and arriving at exactly the right time of year!
