It's true, we are talking just a few generations back and you’re there, in the thick of it. I swear when I visit a ghost town out here the conversations of yesteryear are still whirling in the air like dust devils dancing out of step. With regard to these times being just a blink of Uncle Sam's wind teary eye, let’s look at the Pony Express. This institution is iconic to us as modern-day Americans, yet the whole program lasted just a little over a year before it was derailed by the new train lines! There's something very Zen about it all and adds to the mythos and legend of The Wild West.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cimg style=\"float: right;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0281\/5884\/files\/Boomtown_Bar_Rum_Phoenix_Shaving_large.jpg?v=1531438251\"\u003eSo, this brings us to The Western Boomtown. Granted the term was being used back in jolly old England too and the surrounding English-speaking countries but I really think our fine folks on the frontier added the \u003cstrong\u003eBOOM!\u003c\/strong\u003e Historically, a Boomtown was a small settlement that started up around the opening of a new mill or factory during the infant days of the industrial revolution in the US, and as mentioned above, abroad. Yet the Boomtown we think of when that word is tossed around is gritty, dusty, and wild. These two syllables whether whispered or shouted evoke strong images of gun-slinging folk legends and outlaws, \u003cem\u003eCowboys \u0026amp; Indians, \u003c\/em\u003eStagecoaches, and Gold...\u003cem\u003ea mother lode!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eUnlike a secure job in a quaint British village, our Boomtown denizens where lured by Adventure, Gold, Copper, Silver, a Quick Pay Out, Suckers Suffering in the Greedy Grip of Gold Fever! These settlements were seeded with unsavory types as well as folks just trying to start a small family and scrape by. At the end of the day, these towns were all about gambling or taking a gamble, no matter what your venture was if you really think about it. I don't think it's any mistake that the popular slang of the time was mostly derived from games of chance; Faro, Poker, Bowling, etc...and yes bowling was quite popular in the West...\u003cem\u003ethe Dude would be proud.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg style=\"float: left;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0281\/5884\/files\/Boomtown_Bay_Rum_Family_large.jpg?v=1531438484\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eAs soon as the mine dried up most folks were on the first train or coach out of town and on to the next. With the majority leaving, businesses found themselves selling their wares to only ghosts and soon they too would be on a train. A typical Boomtown's lifespan oddly parallels the life span of an outlaw gang, 5 years...then they were dead.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eSo, with all this bustle in mind I decided to pour it into my latest variation on Bay Rum. It seemed the least I could do in an attempt to memorialize these Boomtown years during the growing pains of the USA. Much like perfuming is an attempt to capture something volatile \u0026amp; ephemeral so is this exercise and experiment I call Boomtown Bay Rum! Capturing and wrangling down the true redolence of the wild west.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eWest, Indian, Bay...two outta three of those words seemed to work loosely in my theme, albeit a different \u003cem\u003eWest \u003c\/em\u003eand a Different \u003cem\u003eIndian\u003c\/em\u003e. Yet for the shear poetics of the compound I wished to concoct, it would suffice. As most of you know by now, I am a Bay Rum freak, and have been for years, everything about this classic splash I adore, but like a spirited painted pony it must be shaped and molded into something useful. This is not easy work and a lot of the classic specimens out there make it look deceptively simple. This humble artistry has led many budding perfumers astray. I really believe people rush their \"Bay Rum\" to market without truly interfacing with it, understanding it, distilling it down to all its wondrous, essential components, both useful and \u003cem\u003ebootless. (useless)\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eOften, I find the stuff out there is used full force, and cloying...with that underlying coppery\/metallic note cutting through. To make matters worse, oftentimes clove is added to the \"blend\"...or it is already part of the premixed fragrance they picked up. In short, not all Bay Rum is created equal...but you most likely already know this, if not, \u003cem\u003eBrace Yourself!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGun Smoke\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cimg style=\"float: right;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0281\/5884\/files\/Boom_Town_Bay_Rum_Gunfighters_large.jpg?v=1531438935\"\u003eGun smoke or Gunpowder was an obvious choice for this accord, but it couldn't be overpowering, it had to play well with the other notes. Being no stranger to using a gunpowder note [see \u003ca title=\"Tombstone\" href=\"https:\/\/phoenixartisanaccoutrements.com\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Tombstone*\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTombstone\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e \u0026amp; \u003ca title=\"Home On The Range\" href=\"https:\/\/phoenixartisanaccoutrements.com\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Home*+on*+the*+range*\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHome On The Range\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e] I had a bit of an advantage, but still it proved a challenge when paired with my bay rum blend. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eBeing that Gunpowder is peppery, sulfurous, and pyrocaustic, I had to really get into the DNA of my current Bay Rum formula and drop down that metallic note I spoke of earlier, practically remove it entirely...\u003cem\u003ewhich is not an easy task\u003c\/em\u003e. To be honest, you really can't remove and isolate part of a scent’s genetics, but you can neutralize it. This was done with Elemi and Labdanum resins, they really took the sharp edges off an already relatively smooth formulation, so much so in fact that it had to be bumped back up, but without adding more bay. This was done with patchouli, but not straight patchouli oil or absolutes which proved far too potent, but with dried patchouli cut leaves \u0026amp; stems. I created a simple tincture in oil to be used in my soap and an alcohol tincture to be used in the splash and EDP. That slight hint of Patchouli's icy green signature proved to be good medicine in treating the deficit I was experiencing in the target shape of the fragrance. Without catching my breath, I moved onto the Leather...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003ciframe src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Jc-jD7MsWeY\" height=\"315\" width=\"560\"\u003e\u003c\/iframe\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e \u003cstrong\u003eLeather\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ePrimitive, Sensual, and so damn Wild West! Much like Bay Rum, not all Leather notes are the same. It's a fact, the scent of leather can be anywhere from Sweet, Powdery, Light, Dusty, Sharp, Woody, Smokey, Resinous \u0026amp; Flora. What I needed for this West World I was constructing from the ground up was Dusty, Smokey with a tinge of Birch Tar and Sharp, but not too sharp! This took a lot of trial and error and once the scent was created it then needed to be the precise ratio or, ominously, like Gunpowder, it had the potential of being way to overpowering. Leather really is a tricky note to utilize in any blend due to its strength and unruliness...Leather does what it wants, like the honey badger. Needless to say, it took quite a few batches to get this right, 7 in fact. \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLucky # 7!\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e Seemed fitting in keeping with the game of chance vibe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSmoothing in the cracks\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eIt was then time to build up the overall shape and presence of the blend with traditional West Indian Spices, Herbs, and Citrus Notes. Some of these elements are what I call Ghost Notes, you may not notice them in the moment, but if I removed them, you'd notice. Other additional and subtle tones will also toy with your senses during dry down, like playful shadows weaving in and out of your awareness until you are left with the true root notes of the compound. Dramatics aside, this is not really a game with your nose but a fun way to describe a complex perfumer's device that is designed to ease you into the depths and soul of Boomtown Bay Rum! The final piece was the Charred Oak Barrel Aging a practice I have been using and perfecting for the last few years now.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAlchemical Magic\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eNext was the maturing process. Typically, I mature or age my aftershave\/colognes in glass for 4-6 weeks (sometimes longer!). This is all well and good, but I really wanted to explore using charred oak barrel casks. There's a reason why the best rum is fermented in Oak Casks rather than not so great rums fermented in Stainless Steel or other vessels...barrels are not cheap, but on an alchemical level, worth their weight in gold!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eYou see, the tannic influences of the charred oak wood contribute subtle notes of vanilla, coconut, peach, and even clove...\u003cem\u003ewithout the clove!\u003c\/em\u003e Making this switch added a whole new level of depth and presence, if you will. There truly is an amazing difference in the scent when compared next to a bay rum matured only in glass...\u003cem\u003etwo dramatically different animals. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cimg style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0281\/5884\/files\/9d7e0a572b0085824a1991b769e913f8_large.jpg?v=1531439294\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Final Piece\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eLastly is my addition of West Indian Bay Hydrosol or Flower Water. Hydrosol is a byproduct of the distillation process of procuring Bay Essential Oil (Pimenta Racemosa). This is done by small batch in my lab by me to ensure purity and quality. I chose to use the hydrosol rather than just plain distilled water as is done with other bay rum aftershaves and colognes. This practice is a substantial part of the soul of my Boomtown Bay Rum Splash\/Cologne, and timing is truly of the essence...and there is a duality to that. To create a pure, clean hydrosol one must know exactly when to remove the heat as well as when to slowly \"paint\" with the heat. This skill comes with practice, practice that makes for a wholeness of character not seen or captured in other aftershaves. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSo, What Does Boomtown Bay Rum Smell Like?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ePure ambrosia to the nose of the gunman, lawman or landlocked sailor of yore! Boomtown Bay Rum is Bold, Distinctive, Evocative, Spicy yet smooth, Invigorating, Robust, Animalic with a brightness and big personality. Unique to Boomtown Bay Rum, as I briefly touched upon above, it contains some excellent Resinoids, Labdanum and Elemi.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLabdanum beefs up the animalic undercurrent with its woody, leathery warmness that hints of pepper, tar, coffee and tobacco. Elemi, an ancient resin dating back to the time of the Pharaohs (Faro: the theme remains intact), is also spicy \u0026amp; peppery but contains more pronounced woody-grassy facets not found in Labdanum, this synergy creates an interesting interplay of sensation when both are combined with traditional Bay Rum elements. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen all was done I collapsed back into my desk chair and wafted a freshly poured bottle of Boomtown under my nose and breathed it in and smiled. Impatiently, I breathed it in again but this time with an open mouth so that I could taste it too....\u003cem\u003eBOOM!  \u003c\/em\u003eBe you a Bay Rum fan or not, there is no doubt in my mind that you will absolutely fall under Boomtowns spell. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eNew Retro Style Bottles\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou read right people, this is our new 100ml aftershave\/cologne bottle. With regard to these times being just a blink of Uncle Sam's wind teary eye, let’s look at the Pony Express. This institution is iconic to us as modern-day Americans, yet the whole program lasted just a little over a year before it was derailed by the new train lines! Granted the term was being used back in jolly old England too and the surrounding English-speaking countries but I really think our fine folks on the frontier added the \u003cstrong\u003eBOOM!\u003c\/strong\u003e Historically, a Boomtown was a small settlement that started up around the opening of a new mill or factory during the infant days of the industrial revolution in the US, and as mentioned above, abroad. Yet the Boomtown we think of when that word is tossed around is gritty, dusty, and wild. These two syllables whether whispered or shouted evoke strong images of gun-slinging folk legends and outlaws, \u003cem\u003eCowboys \u0026amp; Indians, \u003c\/em\u003eStagecoaches, and Gold...\u003cem\u003ea mother lode!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eUnlike a secure job in a quaint British village, our Boomtown denizens where lured by Adventure, Gold, Copper, Silver, a Quick Pay Out, Suckers Suffering in the Greedy Grip of Gold Fever! These settlements were seeded with unsavory types as well as folks just trying to start a small family and scrape by. At the end of the day, these towns were all about gambling or taking a gamble, no matter what your venture was if you really think about it. I don't think it's any mistake that the popular slang of the time was mostly derived from games of chance; Faro, Poker, Bowling, etc...and yes bowling was quite popular in the West...\u003cem\u003ethe Dude would be proud.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cimg src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0281\/5884\/files\/Boomtown_Bay_Rum_Family_large.jpg?v=1531438484\" alt=\"\" style=\"float: left;\"\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eAs soon as the mine dried up most folks were on the first train or coach out of town and on to the next. With the majority leaving, businesses found themselves selling their wares to only ghosts and soon they too would be on a train. A typical Boomtown's lifespan oddly parallels the life span of an outlaw gang, 5 years...then they were dead.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eSo, with all this bustle in mind I decided to pour it into my latest variation on Bay Rum. It seemed the least I could do in an attempt to memorialize these Boomtown years during the growing pains of the USA. Much like perfuming is an attempt to capture something volatile \u0026amp; ephemeral so is this exercise and experiment I call Boomtown Bay Rum! Capturing and wrangling down the true redolence of the wild west.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eWest, Indian, Bay...two outta three of those words seemed to work loosely in my theme, albeit a different \u003cem\u003eWest \u003c\/em\u003eand a Different \u003cem\u003eIndian\u003c\/em\u003e. Yet for the shear poetics of the compound I wished to concoct, it would suffice. As most of you know by now, I am a Bay Rum freak, and have been for years, everything about this classic \"juice\" I adore, but like a spirited painted pony it must be shaped and molded into something useful. This is not easy work and a lot of the classic specimens out there make it look deceptively simple. This humble artistry has led many budding perfumers astray. I really believe people rush their \"Bay Rum\" to market without truly interfacing with it, understanding it, distilling it down to all its wondrous, essential components, both useful and \u003cem\u003ebootless. (useless)\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eOften, I find the stuff out there is used full force, and cloying...with that underlying coppery\/metallic note cutting through. To make matters worse, oftentimes clove is added to the \"blend\"...or it is already part of the premixed fragrance they picked up. In short, not all Bay Rum is created equal...but you most likely already know this, if not, \u003cem\u003eBrace Yourself!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGun Smoke\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cimg src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0281\/5884\/files\/Boom_Town_Bay_Rum_Gunfighters_large.jpg?v=1531438935\" alt=\"\" style=\"float: right;\"\u003eGun smoke or Gunpowder was an obvious choice for this accord, but it couldn't be overpowering, it had to play well with the other notes. Being no stranger to using a gunpowder note [see \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/phoenixartisanaccoutrements.com\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Tombstone*\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Tombstone\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTombstone\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e \u0026amp; \u003ca href=\"https:\/\/phoenixartisanaccoutrements.com\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Home*+on*+the*+range*\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Home On The Range\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHome On The Range\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e] I had a bit of an advantage, but still it proved a challenge when paired with my bay rum blend. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eBeing that Gunpowder is peppery, sulfurous, and pyrocaustic, I had to really get into the DNA of my current Bay Rum formula and drop down that metallic note I spoke of earlier, practically remove it entirely...\u003cem\u003ewhich is not an easy task\u003c\/em\u003e. To be honest, you really can't remove and isolate part of a scent’s genetics, but you can neutralize it. This was done with Elemi and Labdanum resins, they really took the sharp edges off an already relatively smooth formulation, so much so in fact that it had to be bumped back up, but without adding more bay. This was done with patchouli, but not straight patchouli oil or absolutes which proved far too potent, but with dried patchouli cut leaves \u0026amp; stems. I created a simple tincture in oil to be used in my soap and an alcohol tincture to be used in the splash and EDP. That slight hint of Patchouli's icy green signature proved to be good medicine in treating the deficit I was experiencing in the target shape of the fragrance. Without catching my breath, I moved onto the Leather...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLeather\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ePrimitive, Sensual, and so damn Wild West! Much like Bay Rum, not all Leather notes are the same. It's a fact, the scent of leather can be anywhere from Sweet, Powdery, Light, Dusty, Sharp, Woody, Smokey, Resinous \u0026amp; Flora. What I needed for this West World I was constructing from the ground up was Dusty, Smokey with a tinge of Birch Tar and Sharp, but not too sharp! This took a lot of trial and error and once the scent was created it then needed to be the precise ratio or, ominously, like Gunpowder, it had the potential of being way to overpowering. Leather really is a tricky note to utilize in any blend due to its strength and unruliness...Leather does what it wants, like the honey badger. Needless to say, it took quite a few batches to get this right, 7 in fact. \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLucky # 7!\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e Seemed fitting in keeping with the game of chance vibe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSmoothing in the cracks\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eIt was then time to build up the overall shape and presence of the blend with traditional West Indian Spices, Herbs, and Citrus Notes. Some of these elements are what I call Ghost Notes, you may not notice them in the moment, but if I removed them, you'd notice. Other additional and subtle tones will also toy with your senses during dry down, like playful shadows weaving in and out of your awareness until you are left with the true root notes of the compound. Dramatics aside, this is not really a game with your nose but a fun way to describe a complex perfumer's device that is designed to ease you into the depths and soul of Boomtown Bay Rum! The final piece was the Charred Oak Barrel Aging a practice I have been using and perfecting for the last few years now.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAlchemical Magic\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eNext was the maturing process. Typically, I mature or age my Eau De Parfum in glass for 4-6 weeks (sometimes longer!). This is all well and good, but I really wanted to explore using charred oak barrel casks. There's a reason why the best rum is fermented in Oak Casks rather than not so great rums fermented in Stainless Steel or other vessels...barrels are not cheap, but on an alchemical level, worth their weight in gold!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eYou see, the tannic influences of the charred oak wood contribute subtle notes of vanilla, coconut, peach, and even clove...\u003cem\u003ewithout the clove!\u003c\/em\u003e Making this switch added a whole new level of depth and presence, if you will. There truly is an amazing difference in the scent when compared next to a bay rum matured only in glass...\u003cem\u003etwo dramatically different animals. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cimg src=\"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0281\/5884\/files\/9d7e0a572b0085824a1991b769e913f8_large.jpg?v=1531439294\" alt=\"\" style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\"\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSo, What Does Boomtown Bay Rum Smell Like?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ePure ambrosia to the nose of the gunman, lawman or landlocked sailor of yore! This institution is iconic to us as modern-day Americans, yet the whole program lasted just a little over a year before it was derailed by the new train lines! Granted the term was being used back in jolly old England too and the surrounding English-speaking countries but I really think our fine folks on the frontier added the \u003cstrong\u003eBOOM!\u003c\/strong\u003e Historically, a Boomtown was a small settlement that started up around the opening of a new mill or factory during the infant days of the industrial revolution in the US, and as mentioned above, abroad. Yet the Boomtown we think of when that word is tossed around is gritty, dusty, and wild. These two syllables whether whispered or shouted evoke strong images of gun-slinging folk legends and outlaws, \u003cem\u003eCowboys \u0026amp; Indians, \u003c\/em\u003eStagecoaches, and Gold...\u003cem\u003ea mother lode!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eUnlike a secure job in a quaint British village, our Boomtown denizens where lured by Adventure, Gold, Copper, Silver, a Quick Pay Out, Suckers Suffering in the Greedy Grip of Gold Fever! These settlements were seeded with unsavory types as well as folks just trying to start a small family and scrape by. At the end of the day, these towns were all about gambling or taking a gamble, no matter what your venture was if you really think about it. I don't think it's any mistake that the popular slang of the time was mostly derived from games of chance; Faro, Poker, Bowling, etc...and yes bowling was quite popular in the West...\u003cem\u003ethe Dude would be proud.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cimg style=\"float: left;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0281\/5884\/files\/Boomtown_Bay_Rum_Family_large.jpg?v=1531438484\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eAs soon as the mine dried up most folks were on the first train or coach out of town and on to the next. A typical Boomtown's lifespan oddly parallels the life span of an outlaw gang, 5 years...then they were dead.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eSo, with all this bustle in mind I decided to pour it into my latest variation on Bay Rum. It seemed the least I could do in an attempt to memorialize these Boomtown years during the growing pains of the USA. Much like perfuming is an attempt to capture something volatile \u0026amp; ephemeral so is this exercise and experiment I call Boomtown Bay Rum! Capturing and wrangling down the true redolence of the wild west.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eWest, Indian, Bay...two outta three of those words seemed to work loosely in my theme, albeit a different \u003cem\u003eWest \u003c\/em\u003eand a Different \u003cem\u003eIndian\u003c\/em\u003e. Yet for the shear poetics of the compound I wished to concoct, it would suffice. As most of you know by now, I am a Bay Rum freak, and have been for years, everything about this classic splash I adore, but like a spirited painted pony it must be shaped and molded into something useful. This is not easy work and a lot of the classic specimens out there make it look deceptively simple. This humble artistry has led many budding perfumers astray. I really believe people rush their \"Bay Rum\" to market without truly interfacing with it, understanding it, distilling it down to all its wondrous, essential components, both useful and \u003cem\u003ebootless. (useless)\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eOften, I find the stuff out there is used full force, and cloying...with that underlying coppery\/metallic note cutting through. To make matters worse, oftentimes clove is added to the \"blend\"...or it is already part of the premixed fragrance they picked up. In short, not all Bay Rum is created equal...but you most likely already know this, if not, \u003cem\u003eBrace Yourself!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGun Smoke\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cimg style=\"float: right;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0281\/5884\/files\/Boom_Town_Bay_Rum_Gunfighters_large.jpg?v=1531438935\"\u003eGun smoke or Gunpowder was an obvious choice for this accord, but it couldn't be overpowering, it had to play well with the other notes. Being no stranger to using a gunpowder note [see \u003ca title=\"Tombstone\" href=\"https:\/\/phoenixartisanaccoutrements.com\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Tombstone*\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTombstone\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e \u0026amp; \u003ca title=\"Home On The Range\" href=\"https:\/\/phoenixartisanaccoutrements.com\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Home*+on*+the*+range*\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHome On The Range\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e] I had a bit of an advantage, but still it proved a challenge when paired with my bay rum blend. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eBeing that Gunpowder is peppery, sulfurous, and pyrocaustic, I had to really get into the DNA of my current Bay Rum formula and drop down that metallic note I spoke of earlier, practically remove it entirely...\u003cem\u003ewhich is not an easy task\u003c\/em\u003e. To be honest, you really can't remove and isolate part of a scent’s genetics, but you can neutralize it. This was done with Elemi and Labdanum resins, they really took the sharp edges off an already relatively smooth formulation, so much so in fact that it had to be bumped back up, but without adding more bay. This was done with patchouli, but not straight patchouli oil or absolutes which proved far too potent, but with dried patchouli cut leaves \u0026amp; stems. I created a simple tincture in oil to be used in my soap and an alcohol tincture to be used in the splash and EDP. That slight hint of Patchouli's icy green signature proved to be good medicine in treating the deficit I was experiencing in the target shape of the fragrance. Without catching my breath, I moved onto the Leather...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLeather\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ePrimitive, Sensual, and so damn Wild West! Much like Bay Rum, not all Leather notes are the same. It's a fact, the scent of leather can be anywhere from Sweet, Powdery, Light, Dusty, Sharp, Woody, Smokey, Resinous \u0026amp; Flora. What I needed for this West World I was constructing from the ground up was Dusty, Smokey with a tinge of Birch Tar and Sharp, but not too sharp! This took a lot of trial and error and once the scent was created it then needed to be the precise ratio or, ominously, like Gunpowder, it had the potential of being way to overpowering. Leather really is a tricky note to utilize in any blend due to its strength and unruliness...Leather does what it wants, like the honey badger. Needless to say, it took quite a few batches to get this right, 7 in fact. \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLucky # 7!\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e Seemed fitting in keeping with the game of chance vibe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSmoothing in the cracks\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eIt was then time to build up the overall shape and presence of the blend with traditional West Indian Spices, Herbs, and Citrus Notes. Some of these elements are what I call Ghost Notes, you may not notice them in the moment, but if I removed them, you'd notice. Other additional and subtle tones will also toy with your senses during dry down, like playful shadows weaving in and out of your awareness until you are left with the true root notes of the compound. Dramatics aside, this is not really a game with your nose but a fun way to describe a complex perfumer's device that is designed to ease you into the depths and soul of Boomtown Bay Rum! The final piece was the Charred Oak Barrel Aging a practice I have been using and perfecting for the last few years now.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAlchemical Magic\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eNext was the maturing process. Typically, I mature or age my aftershave\/colognes in glass for 4-6 weeks (sometimes longer!). This is all well and good, but I really wanted to explore using charred oak barrel casks. There's a reason why the best rum is fermented in Oak Casks rather than not so great rums fermented in Stainless Steel or other vessels...barrels are not cheap, but on an alchemical level, worth their weight in gold!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eYou see, the tannic influences of the charred oak wood contribute subtle notes of vanilla, coconut, peach, and even clove...\u003cem\u003ewithout the clove!\u003c\/em\u003e Making this switch added a whole new level of depth and presence, if you will. There truly is an amazing difference in the scent when compared next to a bay rum matured only in glass...\u003cem\u003etwo dramatically different animals. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cimg style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0281\/5884\/files\/9d7e0a572b0085824a1991b769e913f8_large.jpg?v=1531439294\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Final Piece\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eLastly is my addition of West Indian Bay Hydrosol or Flower Water. Hydrosol is a byproduct of the distillation process of procuring Bay Essential Oil (Pimenta Racemosa). This is done by small batch in my lab by me to ensure purity and quality. I chose to use the hydrosol rather than just plain distilled water as is done with other bay rum aftershaves and colognes. This practice is a substantial part of the soul of my Boomtown Bay Rum Splash\/Cologne, and timing is truly of the essence...and there is a duality to that. To create a pure, clean hydrosol one must know exactly when to remove the heat as well as when to slowly \"paint\" with the heat. This skill comes with practice, practice that makes for a wholeness of character not seen or captured in other aftershaves. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSo, What Does Boomtown Bay Rum Smell Like?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ePure ambrosia to the nose of the gunman, lawman or landlocked sailor of yore! Boomtown Bay Rum is Bold, Distinctive, Evocative, Spicy yet smooth, Invigorating, Robust, Animalic with a brightness and big personality. Unique to Boomtown Bay Rum, as I briefly touched upon above, it contains some excellent Resinoids, Labdanum and Elemi.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLabdanum beefs up the animalic undercurrent with its woody, leathery warmness that hints of pepper, tar, coffee and tobacco. Elemi, an ancient resin dating back to the time of the Pharaohs (Faro: the theme remains intact), is also spicy \u0026amp; peppery but contains more pronounced woody-grassy facets not found in Labdanum, this synergy creates an interesting interplay of sensation when both are combined with traditional Bay Rum elements. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eWhen all was done I collapsed back into my desk chair and wafted a freshly poured bottle of Boomtown under my nose and breathed it in and smiled. This institution is iconic to us as modern-day Americans, yet the whole program lasted just a little over a year before it was derailed by the new train lines! Yet the Boomtown we think of when that word is tossed around is gritty, dusty, and wild. These two syllables whether whispered or shouted evoke strong images of gun-slinging folk legends and outlaws, \u003cem\u003eCowboys \u0026amp; Indians, \u003c\/em\u003eStagecoaches, and Gold...\u003cem\u003ea mother lode!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eUnlike a secure job in a quaint British village, our Boomtown denizens where lured by Adventure, Gold, Copper, Silver, a Quick Pay Out, Suckers Suffering in the Greedy Grip of Gold Fever! These settlements were seeded with unsavory types as well as folks just trying to start a small family and scrape by. At the end of the day, these towns were all about gambling or taking a gamble, no matter what your venture was if you really think about it. It seemed the least I could do in an attempt to memorialize these Boomtown years during the growing pains of the USA. Much like perfuming is an attempt to capture something volatile \u0026amp; ephemeral so is this exercise and experiment I call Boomtown Bay Rum! Capturing and wrangling down the true redolence of the wild west.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eWest, Indian, Bay...two outta three of those words seemed to work loosely in my theme, albeit a different \u003cem\u003eWest \u003c\/em\u003eand a Different \u003cem\u003eIndian\u003c\/em\u003e. Yet for the shear poetics of the compound I wished to concoct, it would suffice. As most of you know by now, I am a Bay Rum freak, and have been for years, everything about this classic splash I adore, but like a spirited painted pony it must be shaped and molded into something useful. This is not easy work and a lot of the classic specimens out there make it look deceptively simple. This humble artistry has led many budding perfumers astray. I really believe people rush their \"Bay Rum\" to market without truly interfacing with it, understanding it, distilling it down to all its wondrous, essential components, both useful and \u003cem\u003ebootless. (useless)\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eOften, I find the stuff out there is used full force, and cloying...with that underlying coppery\/metallic note cutting through. To make matters worse, oftentimes clove is added to the \"blend\"...or it is already part of the premixed fragrance they picked up. In short, not all Bay Rum is created equal...but you most likely already know this, if not, \u003cem\u003eBrace Yourself!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eGun Smoke\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cimg style=\"float: right;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0281\/5884\/files\/Boom_Town_Bay_Rum_Gunfighters_large.jpg?v=1531438935\"\u003eGun smoke or Gunpowder was an obvious choice for this accord, but it couldn't be overpowering, it had to play well with the other notes. Being no stranger to using a gunpowder note [see \u003ca title=\"Tombstone\" href=\"https:\/\/phoenixartisanaccoutrements.com\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Tombstone*\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eTombstone\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e \u0026amp; \u003ca title=\"Home On The Range\" href=\"https:\/\/phoenixartisanaccoutrements.com\/search?type=product\u0026amp;q=Home*+on*+the*+range*\" target=\"_blank\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eHome On The Range\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e] I had a bit of an advantage, but still it proved a challenge when paired with my bay rum blend. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eBeing that Gunpowder is peppery, sulfurous, and pyrocaustic, I had to really get into the DNA of my current Bay Rum formula and drop down that metallic note I spoke of earlier, practically remove it entirely...\u003cem\u003ewhich is not an easy task\u003c\/em\u003e. To be honest, you really can't remove and isolate part of a scent’s genetics, but you can neutralize it. This was done with Elemi and Labdanum resins, they really took the sharp edges off an already relatively smooth formulation, so much so in fact that it had to be bumped back up, but without adding more bay. This was done with patchouli, but not straight patchouli oil or absolutes which proved far too potent, but with dried patchouli cut leaves \u0026amp; stems. I created a simple tincture in oil to be used in my soap and an alcohol tincture to be used in the splash and EDP. That slight hint of Patchouli's icy green signature proved to be good medicine in treating the deficit I was experiencing in the target shape of the fragrance. Without catching my breath, I moved onto the Leather...\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLeather\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ePrimitive, Sensual, and so damn Wild West! Much like Bay Rum, not all Leather notes are the same. It's a fact, the scent of leather can be anywhere from Sweet, Powdery, Light, Dusty, Sharp, Woody, Smokey, Resinous \u0026amp; Flora. What I needed for this West World I was constructing from the ground up was Dusty, Smokey with a tinge of Birch Tar and Sharp, but not too sharp! This took a lot of trial and error and once the scent was created it then needed to be the precise ratio or, ominously, like Gunpowder, it had the potential of being way to overpowering. Leather really is a tricky note to utilize in any blend due to its strength and unruliness...Leather does what it wants, like the honey badger. Needless to say, it took quite a few batches to get this right, 7 in fact. \u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eLucky # 7!\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e Seemed fitting in keeping with the game of chance vibe.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSmoothing in the cracks\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eIt was then time to build up the overall shape and presence of the blend with traditional West Indian Spices, Herbs, and Citrus Notes. Some of these elements are what I call Ghost Notes, you may not notice them in the moment, but if I removed them, you'd notice. Other additional and subtle tones will also toy with your senses during dry down, like playful shadows weaving in and out of your awareness until you are left with the true root notes of the compound. Dramatics aside, this is not really a game with your nose but a fun way to describe a complex perfumer's device that is designed to ease you into the depths and soul of Boomtown Bay Rum! The final piece was the Charred Oak Barrel Aging a practice I have been using and perfecting for the last few years now.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eAlchemical Magic\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eNext was the maturing process. Typically, I mature or age my aftershave\/colognes in glass for 4-6 weeks (sometimes longer!). This is all well and good, but I really wanted to explore using charred oak barrel casks. There's a reason why the best rum is fermented in Oak Casks rather than not so great rums fermented in Stainless Steel or other vessels...barrels are not cheap, but on an alchemical level, worth their weight in gold!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eYou see, the tannic influences of the charred oak wood contribute subtle notes of vanilla, coconut, peach, and even clove...\u003cem\u003ewithout the clove!\u003c\/em\u003e Making this switch added a whole new level of depth and presence, if you will. There truly is an amazing difference in the scent when compared next to a bay rum matured only in glass...\u003cem\u003etwo dramatically different animals. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cimg style=\"display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;\" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0281\/5884\/files\/9d7e0a572b0085824a1991b769e913f8_large.jpg?v=1531439294\"\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Final Piece\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003eLastly is my addition of West Indian Bay Hydrosol or Flower Water. Hydrosol is a byproduct of the distillation process of procuring Bay Essential Oil (Pimenta Racemosa). This is done by small batch in my lab by me to ensure purity and quality. I chose to use the hydrosol rather than just plain distilled water as is done with other bay rum aftershaves and colognes. This practice is a substantial part of the soul of my Boomtown Bay Rum Splash\/Cologne, and timing is truly of the essence...and there is a duality to that. To create a pure, clean hydrosol one must know exactly when to remove the heat as well as when to slowly \"paint\" with the heat. This skill comes with practice, practice that makes for a wholeness of character not seen or captured in other aftershaves. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eSo, What Does Boomtown Bay Rum Smell Like?\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"font-weight: 400;\"\u003ePure ambrosia to the nose of the gunman, lawman or landlocked sailor of yore! Boomtown Bay Rum is Bold, Distinctive, Evocative, Spicy yet smooth, Invigorating, Robust, Animalic with a brightness and big personality. Unique to Boomtown Bay Rum, as I briefly touched upon above, it contains some excellent Resinoids, Labdanum and Elemi.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLabdanum beefs up the animalic undercurrent with its woody, leathery warmness that hints of pepper, tar, coffee and tobacco. I also remember seeing the stuff on offer in many a new age store on the shelf next to the incense in intricately carved soapstone compacts, lol. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI assure you dear reader, my answer wasn't meant to be hurtful or mean spirited, and I admit I was simply wrong and uneducated in the ways of this magical stuff!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo what changed my mind you ask? Quite simply, it was the history. It turns out I actually owned a book on solid perfumes! I know, how is this possible? But it does happen. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhenever I delve into anything I go full tilt and many years back, when I began working on honing my skills as a perfumer, I ordered every book out there! Some books were even in French! And one, as I mentioned, was on Solid Perfumes... totally didn't read the subtitle when ordering it, all I read was \"Perfume\". When it arrived, uninterested, I tossed it to the side, only to stumble upon it once more, years later, while transferring books to a new shelf.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eAnd after the many requests from people over the years I did become more curious as to what all the hoopla was about in regards to the balm. So I put the tome on my bed and promised to take a quick gander at it before I fell asleep that night. That gander turned into a marathon session, a real page turner!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI am embarrassed to say I was way wrong, my previous exposure to the stuff was very limited, and I really had no right making up my mind to write it off so quickly. Solid Perfumes \u0026amp; Colognes were born out of a rich history and are totally different animals when it comes to scent carriers. I was looking at them completely wrong.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFact is, a Solid Cologne is a much more personal, intimate, and tactile creation when compared to say, an Eau De Parfum, Cologne, or Aftershave. It is not meant for everyone in the room to smell but rather those closest to you, as well as yourself. It isn't meant to live on the shelf in your bathroom, but more as a travel companion tucked in your backpack, briefcase, gym bag or carry on!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\u003cem\u003eThis is part of the history!\u003c\/em\u003e Back in the day, solid perfumes were kept close, often on the body, hidden in the secret compartment of a ring, or worn close to the heart in a locket or metal ball called a Pomander. It was always there for a quick whiff or application to the hot spots or facial hair. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMany men and women even carried scent boxes with them back in the day for inhaling while walking the fowl streets of medieval cities! Some of these boxes and compacts held multiple scents to be enjoyed one at a time or all at once or in different combinations. The sniffer could turn on or off the different scents of the accord...\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cem\u003eThat's just AWESOME! \u003c\/em\u003eLike playing your own composition on a musical instrument. Scent for scents sake!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEven plague doctors got in on the act and kept solid perfume on themselves as well. Many now know that doctors of that time wore curious bird like masks, the beak of which was stuffed with aromatic herbs. These herbs were thought to prevent the spread of the plague, and they were also used to eclipse the stench coming off the patients. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eWhat you may not know is these doctors also came outfitted with a cane that hid a secret flip lid in the handle. This compartment held a blended, solid perfume that could be accessed in a pinch and smeared under the nose. \u003cem\u003eBrilliant!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eIn Ancient Egypt, solid perfumes were a large part of the culture. An Egyptian  woman often wore what was called an unguent, or scent cone, containing the perfume, on the top of her head. Unlike modern solid perfumes, which are mixed with wax and oils, these ancient fragrances were blended with animal fat, and during the course of the hot day it would melt and anoint the wearer...\u003cem\u003ethat's pretty epic!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI could go on, but instead, I encourage you to do your own research. I promise you it is fascinating and will give you a greater appreciation of Solid Cologne and Perfumes!\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSo, with the weight of history dancing in my head I went to work on creating my own Solid Cologne, and it came out wonderful! Rather than dissolving absolutes, resins, and balsams into alcohol as I typically would for an alcohol based perfume, I carefully heated them, and along with the scent oils, blended them into the Beeswax, Shea Oil, Jojoba oil, Prickly Pear Oil matrix.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI find that, as the perfumer, the scent stays truer longer to the original shape I was going for. Meaning, \u003cstrong\u003evolatile top notes last longer\u003c\/strong\u003e and heart notes fade slower too! Base notes will last much, much longer as they mix and mingle more organically with your own body chemistry and natural oils seamlessly. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSolid Cologne is a total and complete departure from the chemical reaction one experiences with an alcohol based product. It is more like a harmonious alchemical marriage, than a quick burn and evaporate dry down effect. Very different energetics when compared, and don't misunderstand me, they are both wonderful, but again, unique from each other, and that's what I didn't understand before.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eEven the mechanics of application are different. Apply it once or revisit it many times during the day as a pick me up, no one will even notice when you do. There's a very sensual element at play here, like a secret with yourself.\u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cspan\u003eI really have to say, this whole process enriched me as a perfumer, I truly felt part of a greater work.
